Due to their layered design and development approach, Micro Services and Web Services are two distinct notions of Application Development Architecture. This blog provides further information on these ideas as well as a comparison between microservices and web services.

Describe Web Services.

Without a user interface, web services allow applications to make their functionality available to other applications. It is a service that makes an API available through HTTP.

Software programmes created using various technologies can connect with one another using Web Services and a standard format like XML, Jason, etc. There is no specific operating system, programming language, or user device software platform that web services are bound to. For instance, a Java-based programme may speak to an Android, C#, or other type of application, and vice versa.

A web service is a method for making connections, a way to join other services into a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), and it also symbolises the functionality of an online application.

Web services primarily come in two flavours: REST and SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) (Representational State Transfer).

Describe Micro Service.

An independently deployable service with a micro-service architecture is based on a business domain with a separate database. It is a technique for segmenting complex software programmes into loosely linked modules, where each service runs its own process and interacts with other services via APIs. It can be created via non-HTTP backed RPC techniques, messaging or event-driven APIs, or both.

Large application failures and breakdowns can be handled using micro services. Since several different services are interacting with one another, it is possible for one of them to fail while the bigger applications as a whole are unaffected. Microservices architecture is the best choice for financial services like ERP, CRM, banking, and automobiles.

Why would you utilise Web services and microservices?

Microservices provide independence at practically all levels, including server instance, application, module, feature, and function, in contrast to web services, which only enable feature and module independence. The easier it is to increase an application's functional capabilities and provide service to a larger user base, the more freedom you have.

How can I utilise Web Services?

Since the same number of server instances will be needed, web services provide independence from monolithic programmes without incurring additional server instance costs. Although developing apps using a web services architecture takes little time and costs more money, it is worthwhile since every application will eventually need little updates and changes. You can increase the functionality of a single application module using the web services without compromising the performance of other modules.

Use microservices because...

Compared to web services, microservices offer more flexibility, but at the price of development and upkeep. With the help of the architectural style known as microservices, you may grow your application's functional capabilities and user base forever. While cross-region replication and multiple server instances may be used by microservices to reduce application latency, this software architecture also supports load balancing and disaster recovery management by routing requests to replicas in various geographic locations.
